The Brief.

Mainframe had the unique opportunity to contribute to the development of One Za’abeel, an iconic mixed-use project located in the heart of Dubai.

This innovative building includes a record breaking cantilever called The Link’. Sitting 100m above the city. This horizontal “futuristic boulevard” is a thriving lifestyle destination with unobstructed views of the Dubai skyline.

Inside The Link is a restaurant area, which brings together six Michelin-rated chefs and a vibrant Middle Eastern food hall, with a live music & event area and destination bar, called The Sphere. The Bridge of Love allows guests to walk over the length of The Link and is lined by a flowing chain of digital screens. On top of the cantilever is an open air rooftop restaurant, bar and infinity pool called Tapasake

Our task was to bring this architectural marvel to life through innovative animation and design creating content to be played as digital art throughout the building.

Our Approach

Our London-based team was able to make a site visit to see the areas mid-construction.

The screens were a dominant feature, and the colour and lighting interacted with the many reflective surfaces. Also with 360 views our considerations also included the sky and time of day. It was quickly apparent that timed day and night versions of all the content would be required.

We played lots of test content on the screens to get the balance of making pieces of work that would complement the building, be an impressive focus but not overpower the intended use of the spaces. We met with many teams and infrastructure to coordinate the aspirations and capabilities of the media servicers and tech available. We then translated these insights into a series of animations and designs that highlighted the project’s unique features.

Arrazuna

Along a walkway running through the Restaurant and Food hall there are 10 large screens placed along the route. The majority of the screens sit directly below Bridge of Love.
It was clear the two needed to visually and thematically blend well together. Whilst also be appropriate for diners eating or browsing the food hall.

The forced perspective suited the space, particularly for 3-4 sided screens. It was especially satisfying seeing construction works and staff walking loops around them.

The Cutting Room

As we all know creating is a process which see’s a lot of really great work hitting the cutting room floor. This project was no exception and we have decided to include some of the process work here.

We are really pleased where the Arrazuna landed but felt some of these renders needed an outing.

Tapasake

Tapasake, and out door poolside restaurant and day club, is situated on top of the cantilever. The architecture and furnishing is inspired by yachts with decking and sails providing comfort in the endless sunshine.

We created simple but elegant day and night looping ‘sails’. Referencing the yacht theme and injecting a fresh and gentle energy to the environment.

Bridge of Love

BOL_TOP_NIGHT.jpg

The Bridge of Love is a digital re-imagining of the Pont des Arts, commonly known as the Love Lock Bridge, in Paris. The Pont des Arts is a pedestrian bridge that connects the Louvre Museum to the Institut de France over the Seine.

This digital re-imagining uses a mobile site for couples to customise a digital lock that can then be cast to the screens to first form and then make its journey along the length of the bridge. Couples or families are encouraged to make the journey too, either via the walkway at the top or as they walk through the restaurant area below.

The personalised locks will be forever connected to the bridge, with all locks eternally being recalled allowing for a chance reunion with your unique lock.

The animation is a blend of pre-rendered and dynamic elements, mapped to the various screens that cover areas on the side and top of the Bridge of Love.
To enable interactivity with the mobile site, we built the project as a Notch Block to run on the provided Disguise media server, along with pre-rendered loopable animation created in C4D.

The Sphere

The Sphere is home to The Destination Bar, where modern mixology meets the finest in luxury, style, and entertainment. It is a unique shaped dome, with triangular screens around the outside.

Mapping the surface we used abstract and colourful light animations to create differet ambiances throughout the day.
