The wonderful team at Prodigious approached us to collaborate on the reimagining of one of the key assets in Haleon’s visual arsenal. Always up for a challenge and knowing how much we enjoy working with this team we were keen to get involved..
The Brief.
With an existing template of graphics we were tasked with ‘elevating’ the Haleon ‘Blue Man’. It was felt they were too generic and not as premium as they could be. How can we maintain the general feel of the character while stamping more ownership on them, ensuring we communicate a rendition of the film’s subject, and exploring the internal biology to enhance its scientific accuracy?
Our Approach
We worked closely with Richard Baynham and the team at Prodigious to explore as many routes as possible with of the ‘Blue Man’.
To enhance the connection to the film’s subject we sculpted the Blue Man to be as close as possible rendition of the subject, capturing their likeness so that during the transition to our Blue Man world it was clear we were referencing the film’s subject.
We began with looking at new textures, concentrating on a glass surface to reveal a full internal structure of the character. Ultimately it was felt that this approach was too harsh, the glass communicated fragility and hardness, not a softer human touch.
From that point we explored various textures for the Blue Man’s surface, varying softness and sub surface scattering to ensure we captured a human element without it becoming too uncanny with a texture that was too close to life. At this point we also decided to close the subject’s eyes to further take this from an uncanny rendition.
Turning our attention to revealing how the products’ benefits manifested themselves in our Blue Man we explored different ways of revealing the internal biology of our Blue Man before settling on a soft edged window.
